After saving Xandar from Ronan the Accuser in the first film, the Guardians of the Galaxy are now famous. They are hired by the Sovereign race to protect valuable batteries from an inter-dimensional monster, but Rocket steals the batteries for himself. The Sovereign attacks the Guardians' ship with a fleet of drones. A mysterious figure destroys the drones and the Guardians crash-land on a nearby planet.
The figure reveals himself as Quill's father, Ego, and he is joined by Mantis, his naïve empath servant. Ego invites Quill, Gamora, and Drax to his home planet, while Rocket and Groot remain behind to repair the ship and watch Nebula. Ayesha hires Yondu Udonta and his crew, who have been exiled from the greater Ravager community for child trafficking, to recapture the Guardians. They capture Rocket, but when Yondu hesitates to turn over Quill, whom he raised, his lieutenant Kraglin Obfonteri questions his objectivity, and another lieutenant, Taserface, leads a mutiny, aided by Nebula.
Ego reveals that he is a Celestial, a powerful being who created the planet Earth. He also reveals that he is Quill's father, and that he impregnated Quill's mother in order to create a Celestial-human hybrid. Ego plans to use Quill to help him spread his consciousness throughout the universe.
Quill, Gamora, Drax, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot must stop Ego before he can destroy the universe. They travel to Ego's home planet and confront him. Ego is defeated, and his planet is destroyed. The Guardians return to Earth, where they are welcomed as heroes.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a critical and commercial success. It grossed over $863 million worldwide, making it the 10th-highest-grossing film of 2017.
